Problem Statement
MusMe is an existing music app facing usability and functionality challenges that hinder user engagement and creativity. The current app lacks a seamless feature for users to match music with videos, which limits its appeal to content creators. Additionally, the user interface and overall user experience may not effectively guide new users to explore the app's music library.
Solution
The project's goal is to enhance the app's design, introduce a video matching feature, and improve overall usability to create a more engaging and intuitive platform for both music enthusiasts and content creators.
Prior to initiating the project and commencing the UX redesign process, we held a crucial meeting with the CEO of the company. During this meeting, we gained a comprehensive understanding of the essential project details and key insights that are vital for our work:
Current State: MusMe already has an existing app that was designed by a different team. However, they've entrusted us with the task of a comprehensive redesign and the addition of new features.
Primary Audience: The app caters to a diverse audience of content creators, photographers, and video producers.
Existing Resources: MusMe boasts a web app and a substantial music library.
The current app boasts vital features, including music filtering, which we intend to improve, and the integration of a feature that allows users to audition their selected music in conjunction with a video of their preference.
User Research: Despite not having conducted user research in the past, they are eager for us to integrate user testing into the project.
Competitive Landscape: MusMe recognizes the competitive environment, which includes giants like Apple Music and Spotify. However, they maintain their uniqueness by providing a broad collection of non-commercial, instrumental music.

User Testing:
In this project, our initial phase commenced with comprehensive user testing. Based on the user interviews and testing, several key pain points have emerged:
Diverse User Backgrounds: The interviews included individuals from diverse backgrounds, including academia, marketing, software development, and content creation. This highlights the potential for a wide user base. Users were active on various social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. Many shared their experiences of integrating music into their posts.
Pain Points:
Lack of Clarity on App's Purpose: Multiple users found the app's primary purpose unclear upon initial interaction. Some users suggested the need for a clear tagline or description to convey that the app is a source for social media music.
Complex Filters: The filtering system in the app, although functional, was deemed complex and overwhelming by some users. Simplification and organization of filter options were suggested.
Inconsistent Terminology: Inconsistencies in terminology within the app, like using different words to describe similar functions, caused confusion. Users recommended standardizing the language for a more user-friendly experience.
Payment Process: Some users were confused about the app's subscription or payment process. They suggested providing more clarity and guidance during the payment process.
Clearer Visual Cues: Users indicated that visual cues such as images, albums, or trending music would help convey the app's musical nature more effectively.
These pain points should inform the redesign and development of the MusMe app to create a more user-friendly, intuitive, and appealing platform for content creators seeking music for their social media content
An empathy map helped me generate a deeper understanding of persona’s thoughts, feelings, needs, and pain points. It guided me through decision making, prioritizing features, and designing an application that meets the needs, desires, and emotional well being of the identified persona.
